MADE POSSIBLE BY A GRANT FROM THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF JACKSON HOLE
Greetings Adventuring Party (and parents/guardians),
This is your Dungeon Master Miles with an urgent missive calling you to come to the aid of our fair city of Galidrium. I am super excited to help facilitate some fun, silly, imaginative games for the next few months and have had a blast brainstorming an adventure.
A little background as you ideally craft a 5th edition level 1 humanoid character (NO WINGS or breath weapons!) before our first session. We can save a lot of time this first session if you come in with a character and some of your background ready, but it's totally fine if you're new to the game or need help creating one for us to make one together there.
Setting: The campaign is set in Galdirium, a sprawling, steam-powered city dominated by a powerful network of guilds. Towering smokestacks puff incessantly into the sky, while the streets buzz with the hum of mechanical contraptions, airships gliding through the clouds, and clockwork golems patrolling the cobblestone alleys. The guilds, each with its own monopoly on a key aspect of the city's operations—alchemy, engineering, and magic—hold immense sway, but their fierce competition keeps the city in a delicate balance of tension and prosperity, much like the tension between the magic and machinery holding the city together.
Beneath the polished brass and steel exterior, however, lies a vast criminal underground, a shadowy syndicate led by the elusive "Cadavera." This network of thieves, smugglers, and saboteurs operates outside the guilds' reach, hidden in plain sight within the city's labyrinth of dark alleyways and forgotten refuse heaps. They have their fingers in every pie: stealing industrial secrets, bribing guildmasters, and, increasingly, sabotaging the great gear works that power the city.
Lately, strange tremors have begun to shake the city. Small earthquakes, the kind that rattle pipes, shake buildings, and crack the cobblestones beneath feet, have become increasingly frequent. At first, the tremors were chalked up to the city's aging infrastructure and the weight of its sprawling steam engines. But now, the quakes are intensifying, and strange events follow in their wake. Workers in the Guild of Engineering report hearing mechanical noises from deep within the earth. The guilds have started to fracture as tensions rise. Some blame the quakes on a rogue experiment gone wrong—perhaps something related to the city's core clockwork or its underground alchemical reactors. Others suspect sabotage by the Cadavera syndicate, looking to destabilize the city's government and sow chaos. But no one knows for sure, and whispers of a long-forgotten catastrophe hidden deep under the city's foundations begin to surface...along with a foul stench that is overpowering even the sweetest perfumes in the cities markets.
Choose which of the three guilds you would like to belong to and if you'd like, a steampunk invention you've designed/worked on within the city and what expertise you would bring to an intra-guild task force being formed to investigate the quakes. There are the Guild of Engineering (The Iron Hand), the Guild of Alchemy (The Crucible), or the Guild of Arcane (The Aetherian Order).
Can't wait to meet you all and please reach out with any questions before our first session!
Sincerely,
Miles Yazzolino (he/him)
